UK flour exports reach record highs

UK exports of flour and mixes reached a record high in 2018 at 370,000 tonnes, valued at over £230 million.

This has risen by 25% over the last five years, with the value of exports up by 31%.

The National Association of British and Irish Millers (Nabim) said this steady growth was testament to the consistent quality of UK produced flour and mixes, along with product innovation in the sector.

But Alex Waugh, director of Nabim, warned this success story was under threat. “95% of our exports go to EU countries, especially the Republic of Ireland,” he said.

“If there is not a Brexit deal, from March 30 these will be subject to tariffs of approximately 50% of their value.

“We expect this will have a catastrophic impact on the trade; the businesses which have invested in growing exports; their staff and customers. It must be avoided at all costs.”
