The Farm Studio opened in May 2017. We asked owner of the specialist Pilates and soft tissue therapy unit, Liz Carlyle, some quickfire questions about her and the business.

What do you believe to be the most important personal attributes of being a business owner?

It’s really important to love what you do. At the end of the day, this is what you are going to be doing day in and day out.

Equally, always expect the unexpected, having an ability to multitask is really helpful as is knowing when to delegate tasks.

What would you say are your strengths and weaknesses as a business women?

Pilates obviously, and coming up with lots of different ideas and having the enthusiasm to take them forward. I am not so good with my administration and time management, I always think I can fit in more than I can.

What have been your highlights so far?

Getting positive customer feedback is such a good feeling. Our clients seem to be liking what we are offering and are coming back for more, we have a fantastic client base of great people which makes it an enjoyable place to work.

…and the lowlights

Administration.

Are there any online tools which you would recommend to other business owners?

Get Timely has been brilliant for us. This is an online booking tool that has saved us a lot of time and effort.

Also, when we first started, we were using a lot of the Google business tools which were very handy, and finally Trello which is great for prioritising busy workloads.

What would be your three tops tips for anyone looking to start a rural business?

  1. Ensure there is demand for your product or service
  2. Know what you want out of your business
  3. Get some administration support or delegate tasks if you can

We then asked Liz a series of fun, either/or questions….

  1. Cat or dog - dog
  2. Beer or wine - wine
  3. Early bird or night owl - early bird
  4. Call or e-mail - call
