Almost 30% of small firms require external to simply stay afloat, but many struggle to access the funds to match their ambition. FedEx Express is targeting this funding gap and claims the Small Business Grant will provide a platform for SMEs to ‘go global’, explore international markets and expand their horizons.

A grand prize of £20,000 will be awarded to the winning applicant, with a runner-up prize of £10,000 also up for grabs.

To stand a chance of winning, business owners must be ready to provide details on what inspired them to start their company, ethical standards and their plans to go global, as well as a clear strategic vision of future international growth.

Announcing the grant, Martin Davidian, a managing director for FedEx Express UK West and Ireland, said small businesses looking to boost overseas sales had an opportunity to win the all-important injection of cash.

“Small and medium businesses are the backbone of the economy and in order to help fast-track their growth, more often than not a ‘boost’ is required in terms of funding,” said Martin.

“Gaining access to funding is no simple task and for SMEs it can be increasingly challenging.”

He added, “The SME market has dynamic companies which have huge potential for growth and development, and at FedEx we want to help them evolve, to have access to more possibilities, to become more competitive and to better support their international endeavours.

“The Small Business Grant provides an opportunity for small businesses to secure that boost to their funding and focus on their growth.”
