Funding increased after grant attracts huge interest

Defra has announced that £23.5 million has been allocated under the first round of the Countryside Productivity Small Grant Scheme, £8.5 million more than initially planned.

The scheme that was initiated to help farmers purchase equipment needed to increase on-farm productivity has attracted so much interest that the initial budget of £15 million was increased to meet the number of eligible application received.

Speaking at the Royal Cornwall Show, Farm Minister George Eustice said, “It’s fantastic to see this scheme has proven so popular, with more than 3,500 grants worth £23.5 million awarded to successful applicants.

“The equipment on the market today can revolutionise farms, saving time and increasing yields. This funding will enable farmers, regardless of the size of their business, to access some of the best kit available,” said Mr Eustice.

The Small Grant scheme is one element within the £200 million package of RDPE funding announced last summer, which aims to boost growth and create jobs in the rural economy.

An announcement has been made that Defra will be opening a second round of funding in the Autumn.
