Professional and technology businesses (such as providers of consultancy services and businesses that sell items online) must comply with the following legislation. This is not an exhaustive list, and legal advice should always be taken before making any business decisions.

  • The Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988 gives the creator of any original piece of creative work, such as designs, illustrations, and website content or coding, automatic ownership of the copyright in the work. Anyone wishing to use it must obtain permission from the copyright owner.
  • The Price Marking Order 2004 requires the prices of products, including products sold online, to be clearly displayed and to include VAT where applicable.

  • The Consumer Contracts (Information, Cancellation and Additional Charges) Regulations 2013 make it compulsory for retailers that accept orders from consumers online to provide them with certain pre-contract information, such as pricing, payment and cancellation terms.
  • The Consumer Rights Act 2015 requires items offered for sale to consumers to be of satisfactory quality, as described and fit for purpose.
